Chthonian is a Finnish black and death metal band from Pietarsaari that was formed in 1998.
history
The band was founded as a duo in 1998 by guitarist and singer Mathias "Vreth" Lillmåns ( Finntroll ) and drummer Markus Rosenberg. After a few songs had been written and a demo had been recorded, the band was inactive for a few years, during which the members devoted to other projects.
In 2005 Lillmåns, Rosenberg and guitarist Jonas Frilund got together again, the latter actually being the bassist and the electric guitar only playing in this band. The formation was only named Chthonian at that moment, and a three-song demo was recorded in the spring of 2006. As a result, the group reached a record deal with Woodcut Records . In September 2006, the band went to Nykarleby in the KRS Music Studios to record their debut album with producer Sami Koivisto . It was mixed and mastered in December. The album was released in March 2007 under the name Of Beatings and the Silence in Between . The second album was recorded in June 2009 and mastered the following month. The release took place in 2010 under the name The Preachings of Hate Are Lord on Woodcut Records. In addition to Lillmåns, Rosenberg and Frilund, the guitarist Staffan Holmnäs can also be heard.
style
Lars Strutz from Powermetal.de wrote in his review of Of Beatings and the Silence in Between that you can hear a mixture of Black and Death Metal that is comparable to the music of Belphegor's album Pestapokalypse VI . However, the material is not quite as high-quality as that of Belphegor and is therefore "wonderfully suitable for banging and other party fun". Petra Schurer from Metal Hammer assigned The Preachings of Hate Are Lord to Black Metal, although other influences, such as from Grindcore , were also incorporated. Overall, the album can be understood as a tribute to bands like Celtic Frost , Entombed , Impaled Nazarene , but also Napalm Death .
