Chun Wei Cheung

Chun Wei Cheung (born April 15, 1972 in Amsterdam , † October 14, 2006 there ) was a Dutch rower. He was the helmsman of the Dutch eight at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens , which won the silver medal.

Cheung began his athletic career with the Amsterdam student rowing association Nereus . In 1996 he won his first world championship medal at the World Championships in Strathclyde with third place in two with helmsman .

He celebrated the greatest success of his career together with the eighth of the Netherlands at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens . Behind the boat of the United States , the Dutch finished second and won the silver medal. Also as the helmsman of the eight, Cheung was twice winner of the Grand Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta .

In August 2006 he took part in the World Championships with the Dutch eighth in Eton and reached 14th place. After his return, Chun Wei Cheung complained of tiredness . Doctors then diagnosed him with an aggressive form of liver cancer . Two months after the end of the title bouts, Cheung succumbed to his illness at the age of 34.
