Chuzpe is an Austrian underground / new wave band founded in 1977 around the singer, guitarist and lyricist Robert "Räudig" Wolf, whose line-up changed frequently.

history

Chutzpah sing in English and German. They were best known for their cover version of the Joy Division song Love Will Tear Us Apart , which made it to number 8 in the Ö3 hit parade in 1980. A year later came “Marilyn”, a homage to the film diva of the same name, at number 14 in the Austrian charts . In addition, the band, which developed from the 1970s underground to the 1980s New Wave, experienced some big gigs in the Wiener Stadthalle and on Rathausplatz . There was also an appearance in the ORF production “Neonmix” (with Wilfried in the leading role), with Robert Wolf in his profession as a real post clerk.

The LP “1000 Takte Tanz” was produced in 1982 in the age of the NDW and offered a good cross-section of the band's work at that time. After the suicide of the singer and bassist Christian Brandl in 1987 and the end of the New Wave era, the story of chutzpah came to an end for the time being in the early 1990s.

As "Chuzpe77" the band released 16 songs from their prehistoric times in 2003 in heavily guitar-heavy versions. After a farewell gig in 2004, the “Chuzpe77” project was buried.

In 2014 Chutzpah released the new album '100,000 Years Ago'. It contains ten new pieces. Carried by the Zwiegesang of Robert Wolf and Stephan Wildner and musically supported by Andreas Kolm, the work follows on from the over thirty year old album '1000 Takte Tanz'.

In 2017, the documentary film Chutzpah by Peter Ily Huemer was released , which illuminated the band in Vienna in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
