Ciel 2 is the second communications satellite from the Canadian Ciel Satellite Group .

The contract to build the satellite was awarded to Alcatel Alenia Space, later Thales Alenia Space , on March 17, 2006 . Ciel 2 is based on the Spacebus 4000 C4 satellite bus and was the largest and most advanced satellite on this platform at the time.
