The Cimitero Acattolico is a non- Roman Catholic cemetery on Capri with 217 graves of people from 21 nations (as of 1994) and various non-Catholic denominations ( Anglicans , Lutherans , Orthodox , Jews ), but also free thinkers . These are either people who have lived permanently on Capri or travelers who died there. Recently, Catholic Italians have also been buried, who consciously wanted this “interdenominational” and “international” place as their final resting place. The majority of the burials concerned British and Germans, followed by Americans and Russians.

Topographically, the cemetery consists of two grave fields measuring around 700 and 600 m², which are connected by a small staircase. The non-Catholic cemetery is adjacent to the Catholic cemetery Capris and has two crossings to it.

history

The cemetery was suggested in 1875 by the Englishman George Hayward and opened in 1878 after many of the numerous foreigners were not allowed to be buried in the Catholic cemetery. As early as 1936, it was necessary to add a second, slightly lower field (towards the Marina Grande). The cemetery was initially under the self-administration of the foreign colony living on Capri (in which mainly British and Germans took part); after the Second World War it came into the possession of the Centro Caprense “I. Cerio ” , which bequeathed him to the municipality in 1991, which has been responsible for him ever since.

List of graves

In the table, the upper field is designated as 1, the lower field as 2, so that “2-40” stands for grave 40 on the lower field. In the upper area there are also graves outside the numbered area, which are referred to here as "East" (near the entrance) and "West" (behind the numbered fields).
