Paul Johansen Geleff (also Poul Johansen Geleff ; born January 6, 1842 in Bredebro , North Schleswig ; † May 16, 1928 in Capri ) was a Danish socialist and co-founder of the Danish Social Democrats .

Life

Paul Geleff was the son of a small farmer and became a teacher in 1864. He worked as a journalist and published the paper Hejmdal in 1867 , for which he received a fine for allegedly insulting the Prussian state.

In October 1871 Geleff was together with Louis Pio and Harald Brix co-founder of the Danish Social Democracy as a department of the First International .

From 1871 to 1874 he worked for the newspaper Socialisten and from May 1874 to 1877 for the newspaper Social-Democrats .

After Slaget på Fælleden in 1872, a violent clash between striking workers and the state, he was sentenced to three years in prison. He was accused of calling for an overthrow along with Pio and Brix.

In 1877 Geleff emigrated to the USA with Pio. There he quickly broke off with Pio, about whom he published a self- deprecating pamphlet in 1877 with the title Den rene, skære Sandhed om Louis Pio og mig selv ( The pure, pure truth about Louis Pio and myself ). In the book, he revealed that he and Pio were threatened and bribed by the Danish police to leave Denmark. This behavior of the two socialist leaders was viewed as treason by the comrades at home.

Geleff did not return to Denmark until 1920 at the request of the Social Democrats. He received a party pension for the rest of his days. After spending a year in Nyborg , Geleff was sent to Capri because of his poor health , where he also died.

He was buried in the island's non-Catholic cemetery .
