Ping (golf)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

PING is a brand name for golf equipment. The manufacturer is the American company Karsten Manufacturing Corporation (KMC) based in Phoenix (Arizona) . It was founded by the Norwegian Karsten Solheim . Alongside Titleist , Callaway Golf , Nike , TaylorMade , Cleveland Golf and Cobra Golf , PING is one of the best-known brands of clubs and other equipment.

Starting point putter

At the end of the 1950s, Karsten Solheim, then still an engineer at General Electric , was dissatisfied with the existing range of putters. As a result, he constructed his own putter in 1959, which he built by hand in his garage at home. It was named "PING 1A". PING stood for the sound that was made when the ball hit. "In the early days, many found the angular racket, which was more like a metal scrubber," ugly ", but with its new weight distribution in the racket head (called" heel-toe balance ") the 1A was absolutely revolutionary for its time". In 1962, John Barnum won the PGA's first professional tournament . With models like the "Anser", PING is still one of the leading manufacturers of putters. A total of 2,300 tournament victories (including 47 successes in the majors) have been achieved with PING putters since 1962.

Improvement in production and custom fitting

The manual operation in the founder's garage has become one of the world's leading golf equipment companies. Innovations in manufacturing contributed to this. The engineer Karsten Solheim made use of the technical innovations of his time, such as molding metal foundry techniques or the heat treatment of metal. Solheim acquired, among other things, shares in foundries and specialist companies. PING was a pioneer in terms of the individual adaptation of clubs to the respective player, the so-called custom fitting. As early as the 1970s, customers were able to have their clubs tailor-made.

There are also standard settings according to the ping color code: black, blue, green or white. The point on the ping iron describes the change in the angle (lie) of the club head to the shaft, which of course is reflected in a change in the angle to the ground. Ideally, of course, when the ball hits, the club head is parallel to the ground. Information on this can be found on the ping website, if you then look for the video "Fitting for the Lie Winkel". The standard setting of the lie is black, i.e. a black point on the ping iron.

In 1989 PING introduced the "Bag Stand", a golf bag with a hinged, three-legged stand that ensured that the bag stood securely.

player

A number of successful professional golfers are equipped by PING. These include the major winners Ángel Cabrera , Mark Calcavecchia and Lee Westwood , Miguel Ángel Jiménez , the Rydercup players Hunter Mahan and Chris DiMarco and long hitter Bubba Watson . Among the top professionals for women are the world number one for women and major winner Lorena Ochoa and Sherri Steinhauer .
