The Taylor Made Golf Company, Inc. is a manufacturer of golf equipment , especially golf clubs . The company is based in Carlsbad , California . In addition to Callaway Golf and the Acushnet Company (brands: Titleist , FootJoy and Cobra Golf ), TaylorMade is one of the world's top-selling golf equipment manufacturers.

history

Gary Adams, the son of a golf pro, founded the company in 1979 as a one-man business. Previously, he was a sales representative for a golf range accessories company. He had observed that with the then customary wooden drivers, the new two-piece balls were hit no further than with iron clubs. That is why he developed an iron driver, also called "metal wood", in his own work. This new racket convinced a few professional players so that they recommended it to others. This is how the bat spread despite initial prejudices. The winners of the PGA Championship in 1984 ( Lee Trevino ) and 1985 (Hubert Green) tied off with TaylorMade drivers.

In 1984 the winter sports specialist Salomon bought the then still small TaylorMade. In addition to sporting success, the capital required for expansion came. The Burner and Burner Plus product lines came onto the market, and TaylorMade also produced putters from 1985 onwards. In the same year the headquarters were relocated from Illinois to Carlsbad , where competitors Callaway and Cobra Golf were already producing.

In 1998 Salomon, and with it TaylorMade, was sold to Adidas AG . The merger with Adidas ensured further growth. After the sale of Salomon, TaylorMade remained in the Adidas group.

In 2007 it had sales of 812 million euros, in 2012 it was 1.7 billion US dollars and in 2015 it was 1.5 billion.

At the beginning of May 2016, Adidas AG announced that it intended to withdraw from the golf business and sell the TaylorMade, Ashworth and Adams brands. Only the Adidas Golf brand, which produces clothing and shoes, is to remain in the group. In May 2017, Adidas AG announced the sale of TaylorMade, Ashworth and Adams to the private equity firm KPS Capital Partners. The purchase price was 425 million US dollars.

Products and brands

TaylorMade has a traditionally strong position with drivers. With fairway woods, rescues, irons, wedges and putters, the full range of clubs is manufactured under this brand. Like other manufacturers, TaylorMade brings a wide range of gloves, bags, caps and other pieces of equipment onto the market. Golf balls have now been manufactured under the TaylorMade label as well as by the then subsidiary Maxfli. This pure golf ball brand was taken over in 2003 by Dunlop Slazenger Group Limited. In February 2008 the Maxfli brand was sold to Dick's Sporting Goods. In November 2008, Ashworth Inc., a specialist in golf clothing, was acquired.
