The cirrus octopus ( Cirroctopoda or Cirrata ) were only recognized as an independent order in 1989 . In older textbooks they are still listed under the octopus (Octopoda) in the narrower sense. Together with these and the vampire squid- like ones they form the group of eight-armed squids (Octopodiformes or Vampyropoda). The group's monophyly is still controversially discussed.

The characteristics of the cirrus octopus are the fins at the back of the body and the trimming of the arms with two rows of cirrus (a kind of movable body appendages) in addition to a row of suction cups on each arm. There are clear remains of the case in the form of buckle-like, horny structures.

The oldest reliable representatives of the Cirroctopoda are known from the Upper Cretaceous . Thanks to an exclusive appearance some will Grimpoteuthis TYPES based on the Walt Disney - Cartoons Dumbo referred to as "Dumbo octopus".

Systematics

The order of the cirrus octopus is divided into three families .
