The Rathaus Galerie Essen (1979 to 2010 called City Center Essen ) is a shopping center that has existed since 1979 and was reopened on March 25, 2010 under a different name in downtown Essen in the immediate vicinity of the Essen Town Hall .
history
The building permit for the bridge over Porscheplatz, on which the shopping center was to be built, was granted on February 27, 1978. This bridge was intended to connect the town hall, which is a bit away from the city center, to it more closely. The original Porscheplatz, named in 1951 after the recently deceased Ferdinand Porsche , was only built after severe damage from the Second World War .
Before the war was on the point of the Porsche Square, below the present town hall gallery, the street Schwarze Poth in which from 1944 to March 1945, the concentration camp Schwarze Poth was. Inmates were housed in the cellar of the nearby Grinzig restaurant without protection and without adequate food. They had to defuse bombs and clear debris.
In the post-war period, a bus and tram station was set up here, which you could see from the Porsche pulpit, going from Kettwiger Strasse to the Old Synagogue . This former Porscheplatz was primarily built over with the western parking garage of the shopping center, which was then followed by the embedding of the sales arcade. Until it was renamed to Rathaus Essen underground station in December 2009 , the name of the underground and bus stop was reminiscent of Porscheplatz.
On March 22, 1978 the foundation stone was laid for the construction of this first shopping center in Essen, which was opened on November 17, 1979, shortly after the opening of the town hall, on 26,000 m² with 52 shops at the time. The construction management had the Group Shopping Service BV Amsterdam . The shopping arcade was named City Center Essen .
The first change of ownership took place in February 1982 through the sale to Boden-Wert Grundstücksvermietungsgesellschaft & Co., Essen shopping center . The second change of ownership followed in March 1990 through the sale to the British real estate company Hammerson .
On the night of June 2, 1983, a fire caused by an electrical short circuit in a shop completely destroyed twelve stores in the shopping center and affected twenty others. The damage was put at 20 million DM .
The first of two major renovation phases began in 1993. The shopping center was expanded to its current size of 30,000 m² and 28 new shops were added. Furthermore, the gray concrete was replaced by glass and a glass roof was installed over the passages. The conversion costs were given as 90 million DM.
In 2004 the third change of ownership took place, namely to Credit Suisse Asset Management Immobilien Kapitalanlagegesellschaft , which had also supported the conversion to the Rathaus Galerie with around 30 million euros, as well as the silver anniversary celebration for its 25th anniversary.
Conversion to the Rathaus Galerie in 2008
At the beginning of April 2008, the conversion to today's Rathaus Galerie began . The aim was to extend the stay of potential consumers in the center and to make strolling into a so-called experience . For this purpose, a new entrance area was built, which merges the two former malls into one. For the construction of this new entrance area alone, more than 320 tons of steel were used and a generous facade made of insensitive glass was built, which is intended to invite visitors to visit the gallery with background lighting. The center received a new floor covering and modernized entrances to the multi-storey car park and public transport stops.
The entire area in front of the town hall was covered with a glass roof to provide space for events. This turned the former side entrance of the town hall into a new main entrance, which has always been used as such. Because the actual main entrance at the southeast corner of the building could hardly be used due to strong winds.

On March 25, 2010 the new Rathaus Galerie was officially opened. Mayor Reinhard Paß gave the opening speech , accompanied by greetings from the Vice President of the owner Credit Suisse , Wolfgang Dorn. The celebration ended with subsequent events in the shopping center and fireworks.
Change of ownership in 2019
In the summer of 2019, the investor Henderson Park, together with the Hanseatische Betreuungs- und Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH (HBB), became the new owner of the shopping center with 31,000 square meters of rental space, which at that time had around ten million visitors per year. A new renovation is being planned.
