Location and infrastructure

Center passage over Kortumstrasse

The two opposite centers are in Bochum's main pedestrian zone, Kortumstrasse (corner of Bongardstrasse). In the basement, where one of the two crossings from one building to the other is also located, there is direct access to the underground line 35 , Rathaus Nord stop. There is a multi-storey car park with 700 parking spaces, and the area is also served by some tram and bus routes.

Location and development over time

Kortumstrasse is of "paramount importance" as a traffic and business axis in Bochum and has had an eventful history since its creation in 1884. It was named after the scientist, doctor and writer Carl Arnold Kortum (1745-1824), one of the most famous citizens of the city. In the basement between the shopping centers there is a bronze bust of Kortum, created by the sculptor Heinrich Schroeteler.

Where the "Drehscheibe" center has been located since 1984, the Bochum Hansa House stood until the beginning of the 1980s, and was built by the architect Otto Herold at the beginning of the 20th century. Due to its size, it was an outstanding building with an Art Nouveau facade and served as an amusement temple until the Second World War . It was home to, among other things, a variety theater , a beer hall, cafés and Bochum's first sound film cinema. As one of the few buildings in the center of Bochum, the Hansa-Haus survived the war so well that it could be restored. However, it was demolished in 1981 and the much smaller shopping center building was built in its place. Some relics of the Hansa-Haus can be seen in the basement, as well as the bust of Carl Arnold Kortum and also through the work of Heinrich Schroeteler. Reliefs and sculptures that were recovered during the demolition were partly used here for the wall design. The Wertheim department store, built in 1957, was located in the building opposite . From 1988 to 1989 it was converted into a city point.
