Coordinates: 41 ° 27 ′ S , 147 ° 9 ′ E The City of Launceston is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Tasmania . The area is 1405 km² and has about 65,000 inhabitants (2016).
Launceston is located in the northeast of the island about 165 kilometers north of the capital Hobart . The area includes 42 hamlets and towns: Bangor, Burns Creek, Dilston, Invermay, Kings Meadows, Karoola, Lalia, Launceston, East Launceston, South Launceston, West Launceston, Lebrina, Lilydale , North Lilydale, Mayfield, Mowbray, Myrtle Bank, Newnham , Newstead, Norwood, Nunamara, Patersonia, Prospect, Punchbowl, Ravenswood, Relbia, Retreat, Rocherlea, St Leonards, Swan Bay, Targa, Tayene, Tunnel, Trevallyn, Turners Marsh, Lower Turners Marsh, Underwood, Wattle Corner, Waverley, White Hills, Windermere, Youngtown. The seat of the City Council is in the Launceston district in the southwest of the LGA, where about 3000 people live (2016).

The Launceston City Council has twelve members. The mayor (mayor), his deputy (deputy) and ten Aldermen are directly elected by the residents of the LGA. Launceston is not divided into districts.
