Cityscape is an album by the German-American composer, arranger and conductor Claus Ogerman and the American saxophonist Michael Brecker . It was released in 1982 on Warner Bros. Records . The title is derived from the English word "landscape" and means something like " urban landscape ", which in itself describes a genre of painting.

reception

Allmusic awarded the album 4 stars. James Manheim writes in his review: “This collaboration with the late jazz saxophonist Michael Brecker from 1982 is one of his most successful works, not least because the expanded harmonies of jazz overlap with the chromatics of jazz, the late romantic polyphony in which Ogerman developed is big enough to allow Brecker to work comfortably - his improvisations seem to grow naturally from the background, and the interfaces between jazz band and orchestral strings are easier here than in almost any other crossover project of jazz and classical music " .

The composition In the Presence and Absence of Each Other (Part 1, 2 and 3) was nominated for the Grammy Award for best instrumental composition at the 1982 Grammy Awards .

Artwork

A lithograph by the Ukrainian- born artist Louis Lozowick (1892–1973) entitled New York (1923) is used on the album cover . Lozowick had lived in the USA since 1906 .
