Civil Rights Defenders is a non-governmental organization in Stockholm that campaigns for civil and human rights in various countries.

The association supports organizations and individuals who are committed to upholding civil and human rights in their countries . It also prepares reports on the situation in individual countries and on specific topics. Civil Rights Defenders organizes events, seminars and campaigns. She advocates special cases with political decision-makers.

The association is committed to projects in Southeast Asia , Latin America , East Africa , Eastern Europe , Central Asia , the Western Balkans and Sweden .

The association is supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), the Swedish Postal Code Lottery, as well as other organizations and individuals.

history

In 1982 the Swedish Helsinki Committee was established. This wanted to support the observance of human rights in Europe according to the Helsinki Final Act . The committee was a founding member of the Helsinki International Federation for Human Rights . In 2007 this dissolved.

In 2009 the Swedish Helsinki Committee changed its name to its current name.
