Hermann Behn-Eschenburg
Johann Christian Hermann Behn-Eschenburg (born February 4, 1814 in Stralsund , † January 23, 1873 in Fluntern , Zurich ) was a German Anglicist .
Life
Born the son of a wood turner , Behn-Eschenburg studied philosophy in Jena and Greifswald after attending grammar school in Stralsund . During his studies in 1832 he became a member of the Germania Jena fraternity and in 1833 the old Greifswald fraternity Arminia . During the Demagogenverfolgung he was suspected and had to Rügen escape, where he was arrested and six years imprisonment was condemned. After three years he was pardoned and was able to continue his studies in Bonn . He was a member of the cockchafer association . He worked as a private tutor and as a teacher in Bonn, visited France and was then in 1842 a private tutor in London , from where he returned to Germany in 1844 and founded an educational institute for young Englishmen in Dresden . After the revolution of 1848/49 he fled to Zurich , where he worked at the Zurich Canton School in 1850 and as a private lecturer at the University of Zurich from 1851 . In 1852 he became the first professor of English at the University of Zurich, and in 1855 also at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich . Behn-Eschenburg retired in 1872 .
Gottfried Kinkel gave the funeral speech at his grave .
His son Hans Behn-Eschenburg was the general director of the machine works Oerlikon.
