Clóvis Beviláqua (born October 4, 1859 in Viçosa do Ceará , † July 26, 1944 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian lawyer , philosopher and historian . He was a professor of civil law and comparative law .

Beviláqua was a co-founder of the Academia Brasileira de Letras and a member of the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico .

In 1883, in his book A filosofia positivista no Brasil , he declared himself an evolutionist monist and founded the philosophical Escola do Recife with others .

In 1901 he drafted the Brazilian Civil Code , which was valid from 1916 to 2002/3.
