Claes & Flentje was a German precision engineering company in Mühlhausen / Thuringia .

history

Claes & Flentje was founded in 1869 by Franz Theodor Flentje and Ernst Bernhard Claes . The two founders manufactured sewing machines based on the Wheeler & Wilson system. A little later they started manufacturing knitting machines . Pfeil bikes have been produced since 1889 . At the beginning of the 20th century also with an auxiliary engine. By 1900 the company had more than 1000 employees.

The First World War and its repercussions had serious consequences for the company: in 1926 the production of sewing machines had to be stopped, in 1928 the production of bicycles. In November 1932 the company gave up and filed for bankruptcy.

In April 1933 the company was re-established under the name Claes & Co GmbH . The company made sewing and knitting machines again. In 1961 the production of knitting machines was stopped. In 1972 Claes & Flentje was nationalized and renamed VEB Spezialnähmaschinenwerk . It belonged to the Textima Karl-Marx-Stadt combine . The attempted reprivatisation of the previous owners since 1991 failed in 1994.

On December 20, 1994, Cl Maschinenbau GmbH was founded. Machines, licenses, concessions and property rights as well as the Claes trademark were bought from the Claes GmbH bankruptcy estate from 3 former employees.
