Clara Peeters (* 1594 in Antwerp , Duchy of Brabant ; † 1658 ) was a Flemish painter who is best known for her still lifes .

Live and act

The exact dates of Clara Peeters' birth are not known; however, it is believed that she was born in Antwerp in 1594. There are no references to her artistic training, but it can be assumed that she was apprenticed to a recognized master. Possibly it is the still life painter Osias Beert, who lives in Antwerp . Arrangements in some of her pictures, such as the still life with a fish and a cat (after 1620), in which the objects show little overlap in a room with clear depth, are reminiscent of Beert's works and also of Jan Brueghel the Elder's circle .

She initially lived in Antwerp, but then moved to Amsterdam in 1612 and to The Hague in 1617 . In 1639 she married Henri Joosen in Antwerp. Her earliest oil painting known to posterity dates from 1607/1608. The last known information about her is a painting from 1657, which has been lost. The exact circumstances of her death are unknown.

Clara Peeters is considered to be one of the pioneers of still life painting in the 17th century. She is credited with introducing the breakfast scene still life type in the Netherlands. It can be assumed that she was a successful artist, as many of her paintings depict valuable objects such as precious porcelain vases and cut glasses, exotic seashells and shiny gold coins. Valuables of this kind were at the time in manorial chambers of curiosities; their clients must have been wealthy collectors.

Around eighty paintings are attributed to Peters well after 1630, of which she signed at least thirty. Pictures by Clara Peeters can be found in the collections of the Prado in Madrid, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington.
