Clarembaldus of Arras

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Clarembaldus von Arras (also Clarenbaldus ) (* approx. 1110; † approx. 1187) was a theologian who belonged to the School of Chartres .

He was a pupil of Hugo von St. Viktor and Thierry von Chartres , became provost of Arras in 1152 and archdeacon in 1156 . For a short time he taught philosophy at the school of Laon (around 1147-1159). There he wrote his commentary on Boethius De Trinitate (On the Trinity ), in which he criticized the doctrines of Abelard and Gilbert of Poitiers like Walter von Mortagne , to whom he was then subordinate . The influence of Bernhard von Clairvaux can be clearly seen in his criticism . The commentary on another work by Boethius was also written in Laon: De Hebdomadibus . Another treatise on the Book of Genesis is dedicated to a noble lady who cannot be identified any more than Odo, a friend to whom Clarembaldus had given the commentary on De Trinitate for critical reading. Apparently his scholarly writings were not very successful because the tradition is limited to five manuscripts, all of which are in French libraries with the exception of Oxford, Balliol College 296 .
