Joe Yukl (* 5. March 1909 in New York City , † March 1981 ) was an American jazz - trombone .

Joe Yukl first began playing the violin, tutored by his father. As a student at Maryland University, he switched to the trombone and played in a student band, the Maryland Collegians , in 1926 , then lived for a while in Ottawa , Canada . In 1927 he moved to New York and played in the ensembles of Tommy Dorsey , Red Nichols , Roger Wolfe Kahn and Fred Rich's CBS Orchestra.

In 1929 he moved back to Maryland due to illness; for the next two years he worked mainly around Baltimore . In 1933 he played briefly with Joe Haymes and eventually returned to the Dorsey Brothers' Orchestra . The Dorsey brothers separated in 1935, Joe Yukl went to California with Jimmy Dorsey and stayed in his band until 1937. He then worked with Frankie Trumbauer , Ben Pollack , Ray McKinley , Bing Crosby , Louis Armstrong and Ted Fio Rito . After that he worked mostly as a studio musician in Hollywood, but continued to play with musicians such as Wingy Manone , Charlie LaVere and others. In 1951 he made an appearance in the film Rhythm Inn . In the musical film The Glenn Miller Story he played the trombone for actor James Stewart , who played Miller's role; He also worked as a coach for Stewart during the shooting. Yukl worked as a studio musician until the late 1960s.
