Clarence Horton Greene (* 1894 in North Carolina ; † 1961 ) was an American old-time musician . Greene's career spanned the years 1915 to 1955, during which he played fiddle and guitar with Clarence Ashley and Byrd Moore , among others .

Life

Greene's life is still largely in the dark. Greene grew up in North Carolina and had three brothers with whom he performed as the Greene Brothers String Band . Greene often wandered around with his friend and music partner Walter Davis , played on the streets or at events. Davis said they both learned to play guitar from blues musician Blind Lemon Jefferson . Jefferson played for some time in Johnson City , Tennessee , where Greene and Davis were often.

Greene and Davis belonged to a group of musicians from North Carolina in the mid-1920s who made records under various names for Gennett Records and Columbia Records . In addition to Greene, this circle also included Clarence Ashley, Gwen Foster , Byrd Moore , Walter Davis and Will Abernathy. In October 1928 Greene played a few records during Frank Walker's Johnson City Sessions that were released by Columbia. In the next few years more recordings followed, including as a member of Byrd Moore's Hot Shots and as a member of the Blue Ridge Mountain Entertainers .

Greene's last recordings for Gennett in February 1930 remained unpublished. Until about 1955 he continued to pursue music. Clarence Greene died in 1961.
