Clarence Jones (bass player)

Clarence Solomon Jones (born December 27, 1926 in Los Angeles ; † 1963 ) was an American jazz and rhythm & blues musician ( double bass ).

Jones worked in the Los Angeles music scene from the mid-1940s a. a. with Wynonie Harris , with whom (and Johnnie Alston & His All Stars) first recordings for Apollo were made in 1946 . Its title "Playful Baby" reached # 2 on the "Race Records" charts in 1946 . In 1952 he performed with Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray at the Clef Club . In the 1950s he continued to play in the Hampton Hawes Quartet with Jack Millman , Art Pepper ( The Altoman , 1957) and trumpeter Billy Brooks . In 1960 he joined the Harold Land /Kenny Dorham All Stars in New York. In California in the 1960s he still worked with Curtis Amy , Earl Anderza and with Jimmy Witherspoon ( Evenin 'Blues , Prestige, 1963). The discographer Tom Lord lists his participation in 13 recording sessions between 1945 and 1963.
