Clari is an opera in three acts by Jacques Fromental Halévy ( libretto by Pietro Giannone ), which was premiered on December 9, 1828 with Maria Malibran at the Théâtre-Italien in Paris .

action

The story Clary ou Le Retour à la vertu recompensé by Pietro Giannone may have served as a template for the libretto :

The beautiful peasant girl is lured by a duke to his castle with a promise of marriage . There she is pampered and seduced with precious gifts. However, the Duke doesn't want to know anything more about the wedding. On the occasion of Clari's name day, a play is performed that reflects her story and makes her aware of her situation. She escapes from the golden cage. Madness leads her to the insane hospital. In her home village, where her father has since cast her out, she is considered dishonored. After their escape, the Duke realizes his true feelings for Clari and hurries after her to keep his marriage vows.

history

As early as 1822 in Rome , Halévy wrote a soprano cavatine entitled Come dolce a me favelli , which was intended for a character named Clari and which six years later became the performance aria of the title heroine in the first act. The tessitura of the opera part of Clari is approximately three octaves.

Clari and especially Maria Malibran's portrayal of the title heroine was described as a success by most reviewers at the time .

As part of her Malibran project, Cecilia Bartoli gave the impetus to perform the opera again in May 2008 at the Zurich Opera House after almost 150 years with her in the title role. The staging transposes the piece into a modern photo novel .
