Pietro Giannone
Pietro Giannone (born May 7, 1676 in Ischitella , Province of Foggia , † March 17, 1748 in Turin ) was an Italian lawyer , historian and writer .
Giannone received his education in Naples in the house of the legal scholar Gaetano Argento and it was here that he drew up the plan for his famous Storia civile del regno di Napoli (Naples 1723, four volumes, and 1770, seven volumes; new edition Milan 1823 f., 14 volumes), on which he worked for 20 years.
The sharpness with which he illuminated the striving of the Roman court and the activities of the clergy in general in this work drew him persecution from the clergy. Excommunicated by the archbishop , he felt compelled to leave Naples in 1723 and to look for a place of refuge in Vienna, where he was supported by Emperor Charles VI. received a pension.
In 1734 he lost his pension and had to leave Vienna. He went to Venice; but soon the local government also suspected his political views, which even his lettera intorno al dominio del mare Adriatico, etc., issued in favor of Venice's maritime rule over the Adriatic Sea , was unable to dispel.
On the night of September 23, 1735 he was brought across the border by Sbirren , now took the name Antonio Rinaldo and went to Geneva, where he found an excellent exception and wrote his work Il triregno, ossia del regno del cielo, della terra e del papa accomplished.
Lured to a Savoyard village by a false friend, he was arrested and first taken to Miolan Castle, from there to the Fort of Ceva and finally to the citadel of Turin, where he died on March 7, 1748. After his death he published:
- Opere postume (Lausanne 1760), from which the harshest passages against the Roman clergy were previously called
- Anecdotes ecclésiastiques (Haag 1738) were published, and
- Opere inedite (edited by Mancini, Tur. 1859, 2 vol.), Containing: Discorsi storici e politici sopra gli Annali di Tito Livio and La chiesa sotto il pontificato di Gregorio il grande
