Clarkson is a town in the municipality Kou-Kamma in the province of Eastern Cape in South Africa . In 2011, 1824 residents lived here. It is located 60 kilometers west of Humansdorp .

history

1839 a mission station was here Moravian Church ( Moravian Church ) was founded. The place was named after Thomas Clarkson , an English fighter against slavery. He donated £ 200 for the foundation. Clarkson became a haven for ex-slaves. A school was built in 1864. In 1875 340 people lived here.

The German residents were interned during the two world wars. In 1970 the Herrnhuter Brothers Congregation gave up the management of the place, in 1996 it was transferred to the administration of the communal congregation. In the present, black and colored people live in the town. Unemployment is high.
