Humansdorp is a place in the South African province of Eastern Cape . It is located in the Kouga Parish in the Sarah Baartman District .

geography

Humansdorp has 20,123 inhabitants (as of 2011). The place is about 50 kilometers west of Port Elizabeth near the Indian Ocean at Cape St. Francis and Jeffreys Bay . The most populous district is the township of Kruisfontein, which was assigned to Coloreds during the apartheid period .

history

The place was founded in 1849 and named after Johannes Jurie Human and Matthys Gerhardus Human, who were the founders of the Dutch Reformed Church.

Economy and Transport

The main sources of income are light industry and agriculture.

Humansdorp is located immediately south of the N2 , on the tourist-marketed " Route 62 " and on the regional roads R 330 to Hankey in the north and R300 to Cape St. Francis in the south.

To the east of the village is a small airfield ( ICAO code FAHD). Humansdorp located on the Avontuur Railway , the longest narrow gauge line in the world with 610 mm gauge .
