Claude Soubeste

Claude Henri Bernard Soubeste (born December 13, 1927 in Tarbes ) is a French diplomat .

Life

Claude Soubeste went to school at the Lycée Théophile Gautier in his native Tarbes and at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris . He made a License en droit and attended the École nationale de la France d'Outre-Mer , which he graduated in 1949. Soubeste joined the French Foreign Ministry in 1958 . From 1963 to 1966 he was First Secretary at the French Embassy in the Central African Republic and from 1968 to 1970 Counselor in Gabon . He then worked as an advisor to the cabinet of the French Minister for Cooperation and to the Ministry of Culture and the Environment.

Soubeste worked as Consul General in Chad from 1979 . In 1981 he was appointed Ambassador of France to Equatorial Guinea . The following year he moved to Chad as ambassador, where he stayed until 1985. Years later he published Une Saison au Tchad, a book about his tenure there, during which the dictatorial ruling President Hissène Habré came to power. From 1985 to 1988 Claude Soubeste was ambassador to Niger . Most recently, he worked as ambassador to Djibouti from 1988 to 1992 .
