Claudia Cadelo De Nevi (born July 8, 1983 in Havana ) is a former Cuban political blogger .

life and work

Cadelo named her blog Octavo Cerco , the eighth circle, in reference to the circles of hell in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy . Octavo Cerco is considered to be one of the most influential blogs in Cuba. Thanks to the help of foreign friends and followers, it is published in French, Italian, English, Portuguese and Polish as well as in Spanish.

Claudia Cadelo is the daughter of a former Cuban diplomat who is a committed supporter of the regime. She is an accountant and French teacher by profession.

In July 2008, Gorki Águila , the leader of the punk band Porno para Ricardo , was arrested: The authorities took offense at the sneering, regime-critical and often frivolous texts of the group. Cadelo's boyfriend at the time and now husband was a member of the band. He asked her to participate in the campaign to liberate Gorky. She did this by translating the blog of Yoani Sánchez , who was vehemently advocating Gorky, into French. Gorky was released after a month. Perhaps the fact that the government did not want to afford negative publicity on the 50th anniversary of the Cuban revolution played a role.

Shortly after these events, Claudia Cadelo started her own blog Octavo Cerco . Since Cuban private households have hardly any access to the Internet, she wrote the texts at home and then went to one of the large hotels in Havana. There she either put the text directly online or she sent it to one of her foreign supporters, who made sure that her texts were distributed. The tone of her blogs was sometimes funny and playful, for example in her comment on the return of the street vendors in Havana who had been evicted by the government, sometimes sarcastic when she spoke to friends who took part in rallies organized by the regime, sometimes flaming, when she wrote on human rights, for example on the death of opponent Orlando Zapata Tamayo in February 2010 on his hunger strike.

The government has so far tolerated its publications, but has put obstacles in its way in other ways. She was denied access to public events where critical words could be spoken. In the recent past, after hours of questioning and without giving any reason, she was refused entry to an international blogger conference in Berlin organized by a non-governmental organization.

In July 2011, she announced that she would be suspending her blogging activity indefinitely in order to have the opportunity to relax and devote herself to writing a short story.
