Claudia Trenkwalder

Claudia Trenkwalder (* 1959 in Augsburg ) is a German neurologist . Since 2003 she has been chief physician at the Paracelsus Elena Clinic in Kassel . Since 2012 she has held a W3 endowed professorship for movement disorders at the Clinic for Neurosurgery at the University Medical Center Göttingen . From 2011 to 2013 she was President of the World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM), whose association with the World Federation of Sleep Research to form the World Sleep Society she initiated. Since 2019 she has been President of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (IPMDS), the leading scientific society for Parkinson's disease and movement disorders .

Life

Claudia Trenkwalder attended the Otto-von-Taube-Gymnasium in Gauting near Munich. She studied human medicine from 1979 to 1986 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, where she also received her doctorate in 1986. The specialist training took place at the Neurological University Clinic in Munich Großhadern from 1988 to 1993. In 1993 she switched to the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich as a senior physician for neurology . After a research stay in the USA, she completed her habilitation in 1997 on restless legs syndrome . She is a founding member of the World Association of Sleep Medicine and the European RLS Study Group and founded the German Restless Legs Association. In 2000 she moved to the Clinic for Clinical Neurophysiology at the University Medical Center Göttingen.

Since 2003 she has been the chief physician of the Paracelsus Elena Clinic Kassel , an acute neurological clinic and specialty clinic for Parkinson's syndromes and movement disorders .

In addition to restless legs syndrome, Claudia Trenkwalder's scientific focus is on Parkinson's disease and its differential diagnoses as well as sleep research ( Web of Science : 702 publications with a total of 25,000 citations, h-index 79).

Trenkwalder is married and has two children.
