Life

Claudia von Valois was born on November 12, 1547, the third child and second daughter of King Henry II of France and his wife Catherine of Medici .

She was raised at the French court along with her older sister, Elizabeth of Valois , future Queen of Spain, and Mary Queen of Scots, future Queen of France and Queen of Scotland. Like all of her siblings, Claudia suffered from physical deficiencies that had been passed on to the children (with the exception of Margarete ) through her mother , and consequently suffered from a clubfoot and a hump on her back. At the age of 11 she was married to Duke Charles III on January 22, 1559 . married of Lorraine after the marriage contract had already been signed on January 10, 1559 in Paris . During the marriage, she gave birth to nine children and died at the age of 27 of complications from a difficult birth. She was the favorite daughter of Catherine de Medici and is described as very silent and discreet. She often left Nancy, the capital of Lorraine, to live with her mother at the French court. Katharina de Medici visited her daughter several times in Lorraine. Contrary to her mother's wishes, Claudia tried to warn her younger sister Margarete of the consequences that a wedding with the Huguenot King Henry of Navarre would have.
