Claudio Caratsch

Claudio Reto Caratsch (born April 28, 1936 in Berlin ; † April 21, 2020 ) was a Swiss diplomat .

Life

Claudio Caratsch was born as the son of the journalist and writer Reto Caratsch and his wife Irma Pidermann in Berlin, where his father worked as a correspondent for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) between 1930 and 1940 . His sister Annetta Gattiker-Caratsch was married to the diplomat Heinrich Gattiker , who was Switzerland's permanent representative at the Council of Europe between 1996 and his death in 1997 . He himself entered the diplomatic service on February 1, 1961 and initially worked for the Directorate for International Organizations in the Foreign Ministry, the Federal Political Department between 1965 and 1966, and then between 1967 and 1969 as Second Secretary at the Embassy in Egypt .

Subsequently, Caratsch was first secretary at the embassy in the People's Republic of Poland from 1970 to 1973 and first a staff member between 1973 and 1974 and then from May 1974 to March 1976 deputy section head in Political Department I of the Political Department. On July 5, 1978 he became a minister at the embassy in Austria and on March 19, 1984 successor to Jean Olivier Quinche as ambassador to the Ivory Coast and remained there until August 3, 1988, after which Jacques Reverdin became his successor. He then replaced Luciano Mordasini as ambassador to Egypt on September 6, 1988 , and held this office until February 28, 1990. Then Ernst Thurnheer became his successor. In 1990 Caratsch was elected Vice President of the International Red Cross - in this position he worked in Geneva until 1995. In 1995 Caratsch went back to the diplomatic service and succeeded Max Dahinden's ambassador in Hungary and held this office until March 10, 1999, after which Rudolf Weiersmüller became his successor. At the same time, he succeeded François-Charles Pictet on April 1, 1997, as a non-resident ambassador on a special mission to the Holy See and remained there until April 30, 2001. Hansrudolf Hoffmann was his successor .

Most recently, Caratsch took over the post of Ambassador to Austria from Adolf Lacher on March 11, 1999 and held this post until he retired on April 30, 2001, after which Johann Bucher became his successor there.
