Ernst Thurnheer

Ernst Thurnheer (born February 20, 1933 - January 10, 2003 ) was a Swiss diplomat .

Life

Thurnheer entered the diplomatic service on January 3, 1963 and was initially an employee of the Foreign Ministry, the Federal Political Department , until 1966 . He then became an intern at the embassy in Egypt on November 7, 1964 and on August 26, 1968, he became an employee of the Directorate for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in the Foreign Ministry, which is responsible for the implementation of the Swiss Confederation's foreign policy strategy in the areas of humanitarian aid , global and regional development and Eastern cooperation is responsible. This was followed from January 9, 1969 to May 14, 1973 as a second secretary at the embassy in Guatemala . As such, he was the representative of the Federal Council and head of the Swiss delegation at the inauguration of the President of Guatemala Carlos Arana Osorio on June 3, 1970 and of the President of Panama Demetrio Basilio Lakas on September 27, 1972.

Thurnheer then returned to the Political Department on May 14, 1973, where he was a diplomatic employee of the Finance and Economic Service until July 14, 1978. From May 1978 to October 1, 1982 he was employed as counselor at the embassy in the Soviet Union and then replaced Jean-Pierre Keusch as ambassador to Malaysia on October 1, 1982 . He held this office until August 31, 1987 and was then replaced by Charles Steinhäuslin . Thereupon he succeeded Gaudenz von Ali's ambassador in Romania on October 28, 1987 and held this office until June 21, 1990, after which Sven Meili became his successor there. On July 25, 1990, he replaced Claudio Caratsch as ambassador to Egypt . He remained in this position until August 17, 1993 and then handed it over to Marianne von Grünigen .

Most recently, Thurnheer took over the post of Ambassador to New Zealand from Michael von Schenck on October 1, 1993 and held this position until October 28, 1996.
