Marianne von Grünigen
Marianne von Grünigen (born on May 27, 1936 in Zurich ; entitled to live in Bern ) is a Swiss diplomat . She was Swiss Ambassador to Finland from January 1987 to November 1989 and Ambassador to Egypt from October 1993 to June 1997 . From June 1997 until her retirement she was ambassador and head of the Swiss delegation to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and head of the permanent representation of Switzerland to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna .
After Francesca Pometta, she is the second woman in Swiss professional diplomacy to be appointed by the Federal Council as head of mission of a foreign representation.
Career
Marianne von Grünigen has been at the Basel University law student and ibid Prof. Imboden Max doctorate . She completed her academic career with an LL.M. at Yale University .
In 1967 she joined the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) and was employed as a trainee in Bern and Copenhagen . In 1969 she was transferred to Bonn as the embassy secretary .
In 1975 she returned to Bern, where she took on the role of diplomatic assistant in the Directorate for International Organizations and, from 1977, the position of Deputy Head and, from 1987, Head of Section. In 1982 she was transferred to Moscow as an embassy counselor. On June 2, 1986, the Federal Council appointed her ambassador to Finland. After Francesca Pometta, Marianne von Grünigen became the second Swiss diplomat with the rank of ambassador.
In 1990 she returned to Bern as Deputy Director of the Political Directorate and Head of Political Affairs Department III. From 1993 to 1997 she was ambassador to Egypt. From October 1997 she was ambassador and head of the Swiss delegation to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and head of the permanent representation of Switzerland to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna. Von Grünigen was replaced by Ambassador Heinrich Reimann at the end of May 2001 after she retired.
From 2003 to 2016 she was President of the Swiss Helsinki Association .
