Francesca Pometta
Francesca Pometta (born June 24, 1926 in Geneva , Canton of Geneva , Switzerland ; † March 16, 2016 in Genthod , Canton of Geneva, Switzerland) was a Swiss diplomat . She was the first woman in Swiss professional diplomacy to be appointed head of mission at a foreign representation by the Federal Council .
Life
Francesca Pometta came from Broglio in Val Lavizzara , a side valley of the Valle Maggia in the canton of Ticino . She was the daughter of federal judge Carlo Pometta and Monique Pfäffli-Pometta.
From 1945 to 1949 she studied at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Lausanne and worked professionally at home and abroad. In 1956 she joined the Federal Political Department (EPD, since 1979 FDFA) and was embassy attaché (1958–1960) and in the department's finance and economic service (1960–1963). She worked at the Swiss Embassy in Washington, DC , at the United Nations in New York and at the Council of Europe in Bern and the Embassy in Rome .
In 1975 she became Vice Director and in 1977 Director for International Organizations at the EPD. From 1982 to 1987 Pometta was Switzerland's permanent observer at the United Nations (UN). For the duration of this mission, Pometta received the title of ambassador (titular ambassador). In 1987 she became the first Swiss ambassador and until 1991 was accredited both in Italy and Malta and with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) based in Rome.
After her retirement, she worked on the advisory board of the Special Fund for Holocaust Victims and on the committee of the International Committee of the Red Cross .
