Claus Dobberke

Claus Dobberke (born May 30, 1940 in Dresden ) is a German film director .

Life and accomplishments

After graduating from high school, he studied from 1961 to 1965 at the University of Film and Television Potsdam- Babelsberg (today “Konrad Wolf” Film University ), specializing in directing. After completing his studies, he worked as an assistant director in the DEFA studio for feature films before he was given a permanent directing contract with DEFA in 1971. He worked as a DEFA director until the film company was dissolved in 1990 and directed several feature films, such as the DEFA Indian film Severino .

After 1990 Dobberke worked as a freelancer and, in addition to his work as a filmmaker, was also involved in local politics. In 1993 he was elected (independent) for DIE LINKE (then PDS) in the city council and headed the Potsdam cultural committee. In 1994 he was elected alderman and headed the education, culture and sport department of the state capital. He was a member of the city government until 1999.

As a filmmaker, Claus Dobberke was the mentor of the Potsdam directors Thomas Frick and Stefan Mehlhorn (“Über die Schwelle”, 2006). In order to preserve the cultural history of the GDR, Dobberke produced video documentations with contemporary witnesses in various projects (including the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, ASSITEJ).

From 2001 until it was dissolved in 2016, Claus Dobberke was Vice President of the Brandenburg Society of Friends of Italy. V. There he shot a portrait of the Italian artist, resistance fighter and partisan Vittore Bocchetta (born 1918) together with Stefan Mehlhorn in 2006 .
