action

At the request of his father Raymondo, Severino lived in the white cities for ten years and is now returning to the Manzanero tribe. He wants to get his younger brother Blas to work with him on a peach plantation in the north with his savings .

Once in the village, Severino has to find out that his father was found dead six months ago. The white settlers also claim that his father was a cattle thief as more animals have disappeared. The Manzaneros under their chief Nicolas are also convinced that the whites are stealing their cattle. Nicolas intends to start a war against the settlers . Severino then decides to stay and get to the bottom of the matter.

The white sergeant explains to Severino that the livestock losses will mean the loss of their land for the settlers in the long term. This can then be bought cheaply by the cattle breeding company. On a journey through the Andes , Severino finally discovers the remains of the missing cattle and realizes that the bandits hired by the cattle breeding company drove the cattle into the mountains.

Before Severino can tell his tribe about it, Nicolas and his warriors attack a herd of settlers and from now on live with most of the tribe in the mountains. Since Nicolas did not renew the contract for the land of the Indians, it is now threatened with sale to the company, but Severino spends all of his savings to keep the land, thereby giving up the dream of a life in the north.

Severino begins a new life in the old Indian village with Maruja, Nicolas' granddaughter, who did not follow most of her tribe to the mountains. Nicolas does not want to accept this and plans to shoot Severino, but at the last moment Maruja throws himself into the shot and is injured in the arm.

Later Severino rides himself into the mountains and can convince all members of the tribe - with the exception of Nicolas - to move back to the plain. The disputes with the settlers have been settled. With the last of his strength, Nicolas returns to the village to kill Severino. But before that he is shot by Maruja.

criticism

“Moderately exciting adventure film; one of the last Indian films by DEFA. "

“The DEFA film doesn't really get going, but it impresses with its landscape shots. Reconciliation cinema without real pepper "
