Kit & Co (also Kit & Co. - lure of gold ) is a DEFA -Spielfilm from 1974. It is based on Jack London's novels Alaska Kid and Kid & Co . The film was shot with the then best-known and most popular actors ( Armin Mueller-Stahl alone was voted the most popular actor in the country five times) from the GDR and was accordingly very successful.

action

End of the 19th century: Kit Bellew works as a journalist for the magazine "Billow" in San Francisco. When he hears about the gold discoveries in Alaska , he tries to persuade his boss to let him go north as a reporter. When the latter refuses the offer, Kit gives notice on the same day and sets off for the "gold land". As soon as he arrived, he made the acquaintance of the attractive Joy, daughter of the successful gold prospector Louis Gastell. A short time later, Kit is heading inland and is confronted with the harsh weather of Alaska. When he collapses in the pouring rain, gold prospector Shorty helps him, who continues on the path with him. In Dawson City , Kit begins a jealous brawl with veteran prospector Wild Water Bill. He lives in a small hut with Shorty and can only afford very modest meals. However, this changes quickly when Kit discovers a system at roulette and wins thousands of dollars in the process. A new hut, good food and excellent equipment are the result. When they have already won an enormous amount of money, Kit sells his alleged (the roulette machine bent because the gaming table is too close to the oven) system to the owner Slavovitz. On the way to a brook, from which gold discoveries have been reported, they are kept away by a ruse from Joy and her father and get nothing. After the two were almost innocently hanged, they set off in search of the "surprise lake" and actually discover it, which helps them to gain fame as gold prospectors. In the meantime, Shorty and Kit have reconciled themselves with the Gastells and get the tip that there is a race with dogs for a million dollars. You buy the best dog sledges; Kit and Wild Water Bill finish at the same height. The money is shared; Joy gets Kit all by herself.

criticism

"Entertaining, stylish adventure film in décor and locations, which emphasizes the humorous, rough accents of the story and encourages its actors to be very physically committed."

"The ... film aims only at superficial effects and flat comedy."

- Gebhard Hölzl , Thomas Lassonczyk.

Others

About the music by Karl-Ernst Sasse it says: “In Kit & Co. we encounter an original topic in the style of a street hit and its variations, depending on the message of the picture connected to it in parallel. In addition, there are less convincing orchestral paraphrases of an illustrative nature. "
