The Rappensee (also Great Rappensee ) is a Bavarian high mountain lake at 2047 meters in the central main ridge of the Allgäu Alps . It is the main lake in a Karmulde with several lakes, including the Kleine Rappensee .

Location and surroundings

It is located 506 meters north of the Rappenseekopf (2468 m) on the German-Austrian border, near Einödsbach and Oberstdorf . It is located in a Karmulde, which is overlooked in a ring to the south by the mountains Kleiner Rappenkopf (2276 m), Hochrappenkopf (2424 m), Rappenseekopf, Hochgundspitze (2460 m), Rotgundspitze (2485 m) and Linkerskopf (2459 m). To the north, the hollow is closed off by the elevation of the Seebichel (2111 m) towards the Rappenalptal .

The lake is located in the municipality of Oberstdorf and is the southernmost lake in Germany.

The 240 meter long and 150 meter wide, 2.3  hectare lake with a maximum water depth of about eight meters drains over the Seebach into the Rappenalpenbach , which forms the Stillach after the confluence with the Bacherlochbach . It belongs to the river system of Iller and Danube .

Little Rappensee

The Kleiner Rappensee is located 200 meters northeast of the Großer Rappensee . It is located directly below the Rappenseehütte (2091 m) at an altitude of 2070 meters. It is approximately 70 meters long and 65 meters wide and covers an area of ​​approximately 0.3 hectares. The Kleine Rappensee does not drain to the Großer Rappensee, but to the north, east past the Rappenseehütte, in a waterfall over the rocky Gamswand to the Rappenbach, which, like the Seebach, flows into the Rappenalpbach.
