Atkins is an Indian film produced by the DEFA studio for feature films, artistic working group (KAG) "Johannisthal", by director Helge Trimpert. The first screening of the film took place on August 29, 1985 in Berlin's “Colosseum” .

content

North America early 20th century. Atkins in his mid-fifties withdraws from the noisy city life into the solitude of the wilderness. In a remote valley he meets a dispersed Indian tribe who want to avoid being resettled on a reservation and have found refuge here. The Indians initially distrust strangers, but gradually become friends. Eventually the Indians ask him to get weapons and ammunition so they can defend themselves.

On the way back from the city Atkins meets the young geologist Morris, who is only interested in the natural resources of the area. When Morris discovered rich copper deposits, he murdered an Indian watching him and flees, only to return a little later with soldiers. Atkins manages to shoot Morris, but in the end he himself falls victim to a bullet from the newcomers.

criticism

The GDR criticism accused the work of, among other things, a lack of adventurousness and emotionality. For example, the film critic Hans-Dieter Tok wrote in the Berliner Wochenpost that the production merely pushed the viewer into the “role of the cool observer” and not, as is usual in the genre contributions, into that of a “sympathetic reference figure”. In addition, the production lacks a "breathtakingly tense event".

"Largely boring and unimaginative adventure film that does not work as a current parable on the conflict of a person torn between two worlds."

"Idea and colorless like the standard design of plastic and elastane from Schkopau."
