Wilhelm Neef
Wilhelm Neef (born January 28, 1916 in Cologne , † March 20, 1990 in Potsdam ) was a German film composer and conductor who arranged numerous compositions for DEFA . In addition, he wrote several symphonies and concerts, as well as an important treatise on chansons: Das Chanson - Eine Monographie .
Life
After attending the Kaiser-Karl-Gymnasium in Aachen , his parents forced him to study philology, which he completed from 1936 to 1938 in Cologne and Bonn and graduated with the state examination as a music teacher. During the Second World War he was drafted into the Wehrmacht as a soldier . After his refusal to do military service, he narrowly escaped being shot. He was able to escape and was hidden by political refugees until the end of the war.
After the war he found work in the theater. He was successively Kapellmeister and assistant director at the city theater in Hanau, musical director at what is now the city theater in Tübingen , artistic director of the Ortenauer Landestheater, conductor in Aachen, Mönchen-Gladbach and Bonn as well as music teacher. At Elly Ney's suggestion, who had performed one of his piano works, he sought contact with the "East" and moved to the GDR in 1951, became head musical director at the Potsdam State Theater, worked as a dramaturge at the German State Opera from 1953 to 1955 and was a lecturer for Music at the Babelsberg State Film Academy. Since 1955 he lived as a freelance composer in Kleinmachnow near Berlin.
After he was chairman of the Potsdam working group of the Association of Composers and Musicologists of the GDR in 1978 , he was elected district chairman when the Potsdam Composers' Association was established in April 1980. In October 1986 he was replaced in this position by the composer Gerhard Rosenfeld .
His grave is on the south-west cemetery in Stahnsdorf .
