Claus Hehner
Claus Hehner (* 1923 ; † April 13, 1986 in Idstein ) was a German architect , single-handed sailor and book author.
Life
Born in the Rhineland, he gained his first experience at the Hanseatic Yacht School in Glücksburg . During the Second World War he was in command of a mine clearance boat ; later he financed his studies as a bricklayer and finally lived as a freelance architect in Idstein . In 1968 he took part in the 3rd Atlantic one-handed regatta from Plymouth to Newport and was the only German participant to reach the goal. On June 11, Hehner's interview about this company was shown in the newsreel. His book Lonely Pacific was written after participating in the 1st Pacific One-Handed Regatta from San Francisco to Tokyo . In this regatta he covered a distance of around 6,000 nm with his 35 foot yacht "Mex" in 52 days, 16 hours and 18 minutes.
He wrote another book, Start without a Chance , about the one-handed Atlantic Regatta in 1972, in which he took part with the yacht Mex (sister ship the Optimist of Behrend Beilken ) without any chance of winning , because it no longer fit into modern surveying regulations. Fritz Nuss dedicated a medal to him for this event. At the beginning of the 1970s he founded the Trans-Ocean association , which aims to promote sporty deep-sea sailing and which still has around 4,700 members in Cuxhaven today . In recognition of his sporting achievements, Claus Hehner was the first ocean sailor to be awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by the Federal President in 1977. In 1982 Hehner wanted to take part in the BOC regatta (circumnavigation of the world with stops). He was unable to implement this plan for health reasons.
