Clarence "Clay" Alley Thompson IV (born May 4, 1992 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American tennis player .

Personal

Thompson completed his studies in English / Creative Writing as a major at the University of California, Los Angeles in summer 2014 with a bachelor's degree.

Career

From 2010 to 2014 Thompson was active for the UCLA Bruins in college tennis .

After three average years, he was one of the most successful players in the country in his last season and was the leader of the ITA individual rankings from January to June 2014 . In November 2013, he celebrated his greatest success when he won the Indoor Championships in New York City.

Thompson first appeared on the professional tour in 2013. From July to September he was at four ITF Future Tour tournaments , but won only one match. In 2014, wild cards enabled him to participate in higher class tournaments. In February he made his debut at the Dallas tournament in the main draw of a challenger when he lost his opening game to Steve Johnson . At the Indian Wells Masters , Bobby Reynolds failed to qualify . In Newport he made his debut on the ATP World Tour on grass , but lost again to Steve Johnson.

From 2015 on, Thompson will mainly play on the Challenger Tour , with the move to the semi-finals at the tournament in Champaign in November 2015 being his best result so far.

Style of play

After starting his college career as a baseline player, he changed his game in 2013. It is now geared towards serve and volley . One of his greatest strengths is his serve, where he benefits from his size of almost two meters.
