Cleft Island (from English cleft 'gap, crack' ; Norwegian Lorten , translated dog poop ) is a small island in the southern section of Prydz Bay on the coast of the East Antarctic Princess Elisabeth Land . It is located north of the Bølingen archipelago and 4 km southeast of Lichen Island .
Norwegian cartographers, who also named them descriptively, mapped them using aerial photographs taken during the Lars Christensen expedition in 1936/37 . Australian scientists visited them on February 18, 1966 as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions . They named it after the 6 m wide natural canal that runs through the island.
