Cleistocactus xylorhizus is a species of plant in the genus Cleistocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).
description
Cleistocactus xylorhizus grows shrubby with spread or somewhat upright, gray-green shoots and reaches lengths of 20 to 50 centimeters (rarely up to 1 meter) with a diameter of 5 to 7 centimeters. There are 14 to 19 deeply notched ribs . The 4 to 6 straight to slightly curved central spines are sub-like and up to 5 centimeters long. The 16 to 22 radial spines are needle-like, straight, brownish yellow and up to 10 millimeters long.
The crooked, vermilion-red flowers are up to 7 centimeters long. The fruits are greenish brown and up to 2 centimeters long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Cleistocactus xylorhizus is widespread in the Peruvian region of Lima in the mountains around Chosica at altitudes of 800 to 900 meters. It was first described as Loxanthocereus xylorhizus in 1981 by Friedrich Ritter . Carlos Ostolaza placed it in 1996 in the genus Cleistocactus .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
