Josef von Haas (* 1847 in Tokat , Anatolia ; † July 26, 1896 Ningbo , China ) was the Imperial and Royal Consul General of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Shanghai .

Life

Josef von Haas, a son of Ferdinand von Haas (* 1814 in Chotieschau (Chotěšov) near Mies ( Stříbro ); † 1867 in Busovača in Bosnia-Herzegovina ), consul in Ioannina in northern Greece, consul general in Sarajevo in Bosnia , was a graduate of the Theresianum in Vienna , linguist and interpreter , for many years in the diplomatic service of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. As a member of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland , a society based in London, he came into contact with Paul Georg von Möllendorff , 1882-1885 Vice Minister at the Royal Court in Seoul in Korea . In 1879 Josef von Haas reached the coastal city of Shanghai by sea and became Vice Consul in the Austrian Consulate General there in 1879. He then accepted an offer from Korea and was in Seoul in collaboration with Paul Georg von Möllendorf from 1883 to 1884 Korean Sea Customs Director (Commissioner of Customs). After returning to Shanghai in 1895, he took over the Austrian Imperial and Royal Consulate General there as Consul General. He was a sponsor of the Natural History Court Museum in Vienna and received a gold medal from the Austrian Emperor Joseph I von Habsburg in October 1895.

Josef von Haas was the author of the German-Chinese conversation book , published in Shanghai, Kelly and Walsh in 1885. One of his lectures, Über den Handel Chinas , was printed in Vienna in 1895.

In 1896 he, his wife and the Italian consul, whose name has not been passed down, drowned while bathing in the sea near the coastal city of Ningbo (China).
