Clemente Marroquín Rojas

Clemente Marroquín Rojas (born August 12, 1897 in Los Achiotes, at the foot of the Cerro Jumay Departamento Jalapa ; † April 8, 1978 ) was a journalist, publisher and politician in Guatemala .

Life

He began his journalistic work in a student newspaper in which he wrote against the dictatorship of Manuel José Estrada Cabrera . In 1920 he founded the daily La Hora , where he published his editorials, some of which were reprinted in other Latin American newspapers and eventually archived in the Library of Congress . He graduated from the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala in 1925 as a lawyer and notary. He became a member of the Partido Unionista . He went into exile in Honduras . After his return to Guatemala, he and other publishers initiated a campaign against the election of Jorge Ubico Castañeda as president in 1926 with the title "Desnudando al ídolo" (German for example, The emperor's new clothes ). When Ubico was elected under José María Reina Andrade on February 14, 1931, Marroquín went into exile from Guatemala to El Salvador . There he helped Alfredo Schlesinger write a commissioned work for Maximiliano Hernández Martínez : La verdad sobre el comunismo Tipografía Nacional, Guatemala 1932, in which La Matanza (El Salvador) is played down. After the fall of Ubico, he returned to Guatemala and reopened La Hora . Marroquín was a member of the constituent assembly. After Operation PBSUCCESS in 1954, Carlos Castillo Armas was made president on his birthday. From 1955 to 1959, Maroquin published Palenque every two weeks . After Carlos Castillo Armas was shot dead by his bodyguard at dinner on July 26, 1957, Marroquín was elected Vice-President under José Miguel Ramón Idígoras Fuentes from March 1958 to March 1959 , after which he was Minister of Agriculture of Guatemala.

From July 1, 1966 to June 30, 1970 he was once again Vice President under Julio César Méndez Montenegro . Marroquín was the first president of the Guatemalan journalists' association Asociación de Periodistas de Guatemala , APG. He received the Order of the Quetzal and the Francisco Morazán the highest honor in Honduras .

The descendants of Clemente Marroquín Rojas had and still have important roles in the Guatemalan press, politics and business. His son Óscar Marroquín (1924-2010) was, among other things, a congressman and founder of the Guatemalan Journalists' Association. Gonzalo Fernando Marroquín , editor-in-chief of Prensa Libre newspaper, is one of his grandchildren .
