Cliff Thompson

Clifford R. Thompson (born September 10, 1893 in Minneapolis , Minnesota , † June 7, 1974 ) was an American ice hockey coach .

Thompson was a player on the teams at Minneapolis Central High School and the University of Minnesota . In 1926 he became the head coach of the Eveleth , Minnesota high school ice hockey team . The Golden Bears soon became one of the best teams in Minnesota. Thompson reached with Eveleth at the State Tournament held since 1945 five times the title, twice the second and three times the third place. The years 1948 to 1951 were notable, when the Golden Bears played four perfect seasons and won a total of 78 games in a row. Only in the final of the State Tournament 1952 they had to admit defeat after four titles in a row. When he retired in 1958, Thompson had a record of 534 wins, 26 losses and nine draws. Eleven players from his time later made it to the National Hockey League , including Frank Brimsek , Mike Karakas , Sam LoPresti and John Mariucci . Other players such as John Mayasich , John Matchefts and Willard Ikola were successful with the US national team .

In addition, from 1928 to 1940 Thompson coached Eveleth Junior College , one of the top college teams in the United States at the time. With these he came to 171 wins with 28 defeats.

In 1973 he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame .
