climm (formerly mICQ ) is a free text-based instant messaging program for the ICQ network that runs on a variety of platforms, especially AmigaOS , BeOS , Windows with either Cygwin or MinGW , macOS , NetBSD / OpenBSD / FreeBSD , the Sharp Zaurus , Linux and most of the commercial Unices , especially Solaris , HP-UX and AIX .

climm has many of the capabilities of the official ICQ client. Because of its command line interface, it can also be used by blind users through voice output or Braille lines. It provides support for sending and receiving confirmed and unacknowledged Unicode- encoded messages (it understands UTF-8 also for message types for which the official client does not use it) and the recognition of other clients.

climm supports SSL-encrypted, compatible direct connections to licq and SIM Instant Messenger as well as OTR -encrypted messages and is correctly internationalized ; German, English and other translations are included. climm can use several UINs (user numbers) at the same time and can be configured in many ways (e.g. different colors for incoming messages from different contacts or to different - own - user numbers).

climm also supports the basic functionality of the XMPP protocol.

climm is licensed under the terms of the 2nd version of the GNU General Public License ; recently the licensing was extended to include the OpenSSL exception. Versions prior to micq 0.4.8 have been released into the public domain by Matt D. Smith ; however, little remains of the original code. All later additions are by Rüdiger Kuhlmann, especially the support for the current ICQ protocol version 8.

A conflict broke out between the maintainer and the Debian package maintainer in 2003, which resulted in long discussions within the Debian community. Kuhlmann was able to accommodate a modified version of the program in Debian, which only issued an error message and then exited to express his dissatisfaction with the quality assurance in the Debian project. The package mICQ was removed from the package repositories after the dispute was resolved.

With the release of version 0.6 on September 10, 2007, mICQ was renamed climm . Climm stands for " CLI- based Multi-Messenger".
