Cliqz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cliqz is a browser extension and a web browser with an integrated search engine . The provider is the German Cliqz GmbH, a majority holding of Hubert Burda Media with a strategic minority holding by Mozilla . Cliqz is seen in connection with the ancillary copyright for press publishers and, according to press reports, is directed against Google .

history

Cliqz was initially developed as a quick search extension for the Firefox browser , which was released in June 2014. Cliqz has been available as an independent browser since the end of 2015. In addition to the desktop version, corresponding apps are also available for the mobile operating systems Android and iOS .

Version 1.0 of Cliqz for Windows and Mac was released on March 8, 2016.

At the beginning of 2017, Cliqz acquired part of the brand and technology from Ghostery in order to integrate its anti-tracking function and merge its data with the data aggregated via tracking services. Shortly thereafter, Avira released the Scout browser , which includes Cliqz's quick search function.

On April 29, 2020, the media group Burda announced that the project would be abandoned.

Functions

The desktop versions of the browser support Windows from Windows 7 or macOS 10.9 and higher. The mobile apps support Android and iOS . Unofficially, Windows XP / Vista and Linux are also supported. The Linux version was officially released in July 2016 as a 64-bit version for Debian, after which official support was discontinued. However, the version can still be used as a self-developed build or an internal build.

Cliqz combines search engine and browser. A quick search is carried out directly in the browser without having to go to another search engine page. Search terms or parts of the name of a website are entered directly in the browser line. Users immediately see website suggestions in a browser menu (drop down). Clicking on one of the suggestions leads directly to the corresponding website.

Comparison of screenshots of the Cliqz quick search function (above) with the search using the Chrome Omnibar (below) using the example of the entry "hotel mallorca". Cliqz shows website suggestions in a browser menu (drop down). Clicking on one of the suggestions leads directly to the respective website. Chrome shows suggestions for refining the search in its browser menu. A click on a search suggestion leads to the search engine results page.

The provider states that, unlike conventional browsers and search engines, Cliqz does not collect any data about users. On the servers of the provider no data is stored by its own account, the conclusions about people and their behavior permitted in the net. In addition, the anti-tracking function protects against the transmission of potentially personally identifiable data to trackers.

The search engine works with an independent web index that operates independently of conventional search engines. By combining the results of the search engine with browser data such as history and bookmarks, individual website suggestions are displayed. The browser data is processed locally, which means that it remains on the device, in the possession and under the control of the user.

However, this does not mean that no statistical data is collected and temporarily stored on servers. The Human Web is a technology developed by Cliqz that collects statistical data to evaluate the relevance and safety of websites. The data is encrypted and transmitted via a proxy . All user or personally identifiable data (such as IP addresses) are deleted from the data records. In this way, the community of users anonymously contributes to the development of web statistics with every website visit. These form the basis for the search engine's web index. This can be verified through the integrated transparency cockpit , in which users can see which data is leaving the browser and what is happening with it.

Frequently visited websites are displayed when a new tab is opened in the browser. Quick access options can be removed or added manually. The page also includes headlines from major news websites and links to related articles.

reception

The Stiftung Warentest criticized after a quick test in April 2016. The promised phishing protection is not effective. Cliqz explained this by stating that the human web must first incorporate the user experience. Furthermore, Stiftung Warentest found the protection against malware to be as inadequate as with other browsers. Before the digital fingerprint also Cliqz could not protect, was the foundation. In a review by PC Magazin it was criticized that the desktop browser does not support browser extensions (add-ons). The manufacturer justifies this with the data protection risks associated with some add-ons. From version 1.24.0 the Cliqz browser for Windows and macOS basically supports extensions from the Firefox add-ons store, but according to the manufacturer, for data protection and performance reasons, it continues to block add-ons that use certain programming interfaces (APIs).
