Clive Brook
Clive Hardman Brook (born June 1, 1887 in London , † November 17, 1974 ) was a British actor .
Life
Clive Brook was the son of a mine owner and an opera singer. He first worked in the insurance industry and as a newspaper reporter. After his military service in World War I, he began an acting career on stages in London. From 1920 he also worked for British film and in 1924 he got his first roles in Hollywood . Brook played in Josef von Sternberg's Unterwelt and appeared in front of the camera as Sherlock Holmes in Basil Dean's The Return of Sherlock Holmes in 1929 .
Again under Sternberg, he played in 1932 as a partner of Marlene Dietrich in Shanghai Express and the leading role in the Oscar-winning film cavalcade . In 1934 he returned to England and appeared as Struensee in Victor Saville's My Heart of the Queen . With the comedy Husband on view , which Brook also directed, he ended his film career in 1943 and turned back to the stage. He returned in front of the camera only 20 years later as the venerable Marquis Gleneyre in John Huston's The List of the Dead .
His daughter Faith Brook and son Lyndon Brook were also actors.
